Great Nutrition Tips

Here are some great nutrition tips from our wonderful speaker, Karen Shaw, who spoke on January 12.

1. A quality vitamin is a must. Remember to take a prenatal if nursing, expecting or could possibly be expecting. Make sure to stay 0n a prenatal until know for sure you finished having children.

2. Multivitamins are a good baseline to start with, but fish oil, calcium and probiotics are also key supplements to take.

3. Best to take vitamins with food.

4. Quality, Quality, Quality of a vitamin is the most important.

5. Liquid vitamins are assimilated into the body the quickest, followed by capsule form. Tablet vitamins are great for slow release.

6. Probiotics are tiny single cell microorganisms (good bacteria) that are naturally found as part of our intestinal flora. Things like illness, stress, antibiotics and surgery diminish our natural bacterial balance.

7. Make sure to do your homework and find out which probiotic supplement would be best for you and your situation.

8. Probiotics should be refrigerated.

9. Vitamins and supplements of high quality can often be bought at the best prices online.

10. Flax seed, brown rice and wheat germ need to be stored in the refrigerator because the oils contained within them start to break down over time if left at room temp.

11. Don't eat dairy and protein together. Loose some of the calcium in the dairy if eaten with protein.

12. Best way to slim down after having a baby is to exercise and do not consume less than 1200 calories a day, 1500 if nursing. Make sure to eat breakfast and smaller meals throughout the day.

13. If you go for long periods of time between eating your body is more likely to hold onto fat.

14. Focus on trying to eat whole plant based foods like oatmeal, tofu, dark greens, kale, and brussel sprouts.
